2009 Belmont Stakes Betting
Belmont Park is a
major thoroughbred horse-racing facility located just outside New York City, in
the adjacent Nassau County suburb of Elmont, Long Island. Its mile-and-a-half
(2.4 km) main track is the largest dirt course in Thoroughbred racing.
Winners of the
Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes often make for some intense
rematches between the horse racing's top contenders - a level of
competition that makes for even greater viewing for horse racing
betting fans or for those watching it on television.
The third jewel in the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes can make or
break a Triple Crown champion.
For horse racing fans intent on following the Triple Crown, the
Belmont Stakes can be the hardest race to handicap because of its
longer track. The main thing to consider, then, is picking a horse
that has proven it can go the distance. this means that you have to
pay closer attention to how a horse runs the races that occur
earlier in the season that resemble the Belmont. Look for the horses
that perform well in other 1 mile long races, as that is the length
of the Belmont. Over the years many horses have won the first two
races in the Triple Crown only to be defeated in the Belmont Stakes.
Belmont Park
Racetrack Info:
Belmont Park is the largest track in the United States. It has three
racing ovals. one grand one-mile main track and two generous turf
courses.
A symbol of the track is the tree located in the center of the
paddock. The Belmont logo represents that tree.
Belmont is the only Triple Crown race without an infield hosting a
mosh pit. It is, however, the only Triple Crown race where
general-admission fans can pile onto the track apron and actually be
lucky enough to see the race.
The Fastest Belmont
Who else? Secretariat set a world-record that still stands for the
mile and a half distance on a dirt track at 2:24. (He had finished a
mile and a quarter at 1:59, faster than his own Derby record of 1:59
2/5.)
Belmont Trophy
The Belmont Stakes trophy is a Tiffany-made silver bowl, with cover,
18 inches high,
15 inches across and 14 inches at the base. Atop the cover is a
silver figure of Fenian,
winner of the third running of the Belmont Stakes in 1869. The bowl
is supported by
three horses representing the three foundation
thoroughbreds--Eclipse, Herod and Matchem. The trophy, a solid
silver bowl originally crafted by Tiffany's, was presented by the
Belmont family as a perpetual award for the Belmont Stakes in 1926.
It was the trophy
August Belmont's Fenian won in 1869 and had remained with the
Belmont family since
that time. The winning owner is given the option of keeping the
trophy for the year
their horse reigns as Belmont champion.
